Short session with Andy M and Steven on foils. Again I arrived 9am instead
of 8am with only 2hrs left of tide and wind swinging off sometimes, it was
important to leave the water when it turned.
Wind was lightish but decent gusts were coming thru so the other 2 guys
went 7m and me 8.5.
Andy and Steve were flying early on gusts as they are much lighter. Another
poxy sport where 100+ kg dont work in light winds.
Rigged the RRD foil - 85 mast 800 Fwing and 35 rear wing on a 147 Starboard
Ultrasonic. The wind dropped as soon as stepped on the board! so first 20
mins was pumping to achieve flight. Never flew the first 20 mins, but the
wind kicked in brilliant and its so much easier when powered up. First
flight achieved without pumping, and now have it off to a tee. Bear off,
pumped once to release the board whilst foot in the strap, kick down on
mast and up she comes! First run downwind long way, with a couple of touch
downs. The sessh was all about going up wind and sustaining flight. Watched
several UT vids and was trying to put them in action. Steve and Andy were
now flying all over the place and the sun was out so great day.
First upwind attempt wiped out straight over the top when I tried to use
the back strap, so decided to stay out of that. As I was in flight a huge
cargo ship came into the river honking his hooter, so I had to land and
stall whilst it carried on. Poor old Stevie has several blasts as he didn't
see it and was on a collision course! Lucky he heard it and tacked asap
avoid the inevitable carnage! Brilliant!
Started flight again just in front strap, hooked in and heel up nicely into
wind. Frekking brilliant first close reach going really high. Bombed off
downwind again, repeating the runs till I could say I can now foil.
I still wipe out massively, so not really relaxed like on fin, and am still
kangarooing down wind like a amateur.
Av ordered a large rear wing to stabilise the flight as its ultra sensitive
with my weight. The one thing I know and as all the experts have said,
learners def have to be fully powered up to succeed as its very difficult
to take off in light airs. Am still using large sails cos small ones are
pointless for learning - especially for heavy weights.
